Look hues talking

There is a hair style and colour to suit every taste, say the hair professionals

New hairstyles Short cuts and in many colours

It’s a heady combination of colours and cuts. You can choose a Kelly look— an absolute short hair cut and colour it with copper tones, or a Daniela, a combination of a short hair cut with a fringe, violet and a blonde highlight and a two- colour base of chocolate brown and dark violet. Or, there is Laura, a classical style— layered, sober, no textures, not so trendy, but classic.

Hair specialist Bony Sasidharan demonstrated different looks to explain how the edgy new styles, be it the elegant and classy ‘New Romance’ or a quirky ‘Schools Out’ were created. “Schools Out is when you cut your hair in an uneven, unstructured way,” says Bony, technical advisor for Schwarzkopf Professional, who was in Coimbatore recently to unveil Spirit Collection 2008, a compilation of brand new hairstyles and colours for the coming season.

Shwocasing trends

Schwarzkopf Professional’s bi-annual (spring /summer and autumn/winter) Essential Looks collection, draws inspiration from the world of haute couture, the fashion weeks of London, Paris, Milan and New York, creates distinct hair style trends and showcase the techniques to hair dressing salons worldwide. And, in turn serves as a window to the world of catwalk fashion for salon hairdressers.

This year, it is called the ‘Spirit Collection’ and the four new styles introduced are, New Romance, East, Brigade and Schools Out. New Romance is ultra feminine with curls piled and tumbling, and the colours are deep darks or golden with soft highlights or warm lowlights.

“Yellow blonde, golden blonde, coppers are back. Reds and violets are in. The colours are not flashy, more on the sober side and more visible and perfect for the summer when the sun is high,” he adds. The Brigade look for men is a sharp design and in natural colours. The East look is sculptured with an Asian inspired hair design. Schools Out is a mix-and-match of deconstructed styling, youthful and with layered detailing.

Short cuts and subtle colours are the keywords. “New techniques of hair styling and hair colouring are created twice a year to accentuate the look of global fashion. We follow the global trends and come up with matching styles,” says Arvind Sudarshan, Regional Sales Manager of Schwarzkopf Professional India.

Shadow effect

“Internationally, hair cuts are getting shorter. Women prefer wearing smaller cuts, which is easier to carry off. In hair colours, people are moving towards a shadow effect. Europeans go in for dark colours, we tone it down and Indianise it to suit the Indian skin, hair colour and texture,” he explains. Bony who specialises in creative and corrective hair colouring, cutting and texturising, says hair fashion has acquired a new dimension today. “The wheatish Indian skin tone can easily carry off browns and coppers. Short cuts falling up to shoulder length with no definite layering or steps, but which gives an uneven look with a lot of zig zags to show movement, are in,” Bony says.

Classic look

For men, he says it is the classic look all the way. “Sides and back will have a perfect finish with more texture in the front. They can comb it and keep it classically simple or spike it when out for a party. Fringes and short layers are popular too,” he adds.

Arvind attributes the changing trends to fashion channels and movies. In the South, he says though straight hair, inspired from actors such as Trisha and Sneha is a big hit among youngsters, they are willing to experiment new styles too. Such as highlighting with streaks in contrasting browns, reds and violets, or brown global (entire hair is coloured) with blonde streaks.

“Because, a new hair style makes you look and feel good,” he declares.
