New Audis on the way

German carmaker Audi is all set for an assault on the Indian car market. The company which recently launched its all-new A4 saloon is ready to sell the A8 W12. This is the top-of-the line A8 and comes with a mammoth 12-cylinder engine. The long wheelbase of the car takes the comfort level of this car to limousine category. It is expected to retail over the Rs 1 crore mark.

Then you have the R8 supercar which will be on offer by September. This car rivals the legendary Porsche 911 internationally and comes with a V8, 400bhp-plus petrol engine.

The R8 is a stunning design that comes with a great interior as well. The car has already won numerous awards, notably Performance Car of the Year 2008 and Design of the Year 2008 at the World Car Awards. It has gone head-to-head with, and beaten the very best from Italy and Germany.

Audi has already taken pre-bookings from its privileged customers in India. The next car on sale will be the Q5. This SUV is based on the A4 saloon platform and will be a direct rival to BMW’s X3. The Q5 is smaller than the Q7 and comes with a choice of three engine options — one petrol engine and two diesel TDI units. The 2-litre turbo engine delivers 211bhp, while the 2-litre and 3-litre diesels deliver 170bhp and 240bhp respectively.

If you liked the interiors on the A4 saloon, then you’ll love the Q5’s cabin as well that is based on that car. The Q5 should be here early next year and should be competitively priced. We expect it to retail between the Rs 40-50 lakh mark.

Audi is in the process of beefing up its dealership and after-sales network in the country. The company which already has dealerships in Delhi, Gurgaon, Chandigarh, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune now plans to open new ones in cities such as Ahmedabad.
