Hit by a stone

N. N. Rimzon’s installation at Kashi Art Café speaks volumes about the trauma of communal violence

Etched conflict N. N. RImzon’s installation

N. N. Rimzon’s installation ‘Speaking Stones’ is a strong comment. A brilliant exposition on the shame of communal violence that has raised its ugly head since Partition to the present, the work radiates outward from a subject.

Reality

Far from the violence it speaks of, the central figure is almost childlike in its natal nascent posture. The figure covers its visage, hiding from the shameful reality or ashamed of the civilisation he is part of. The raw and ravaging violence surround this feeble form, in vivid sharp rocky stones encircling it. These pointed shrapnel and shards aim directly at the viewer’s sensibilities.

They are strategically placed on black and white photographs of communal riots, culled carefully from magazines and newspapers. They parade the entire history of hate since the birth of the nation.

The artist offers no remedies but only a strong expression of the crimes on humanity by humanity.

Speaking Stones was done a decade ago and has travelled for many shows outside Kerala. It is being exhibited in Kochi for the first time in a series called ‘Only ONE’.

The series will host just one popular work of a known artist. The next show will be of Jitish Kallat followed by Bose Krishnamachari.

Speaking Stones is on for a month at the spruced upKashi Art Café, Fort Kochi.
