Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt (born 21 August, 1986) who holds the current world record in the 100m dash at 9.72 seconds, is also the Jamaican record holder in the 200m at 19.67 seconds. His outstanding achievements in sprinting have earned him the nickname of “The Lightning Bolt.”
Weightlifter Naim Suleymanoglu was originally named Naim Suleimanov. He won three Olympic championships, seven world championships and six European championships and broke 46 world records. Born in Bulgaria of Turkish descent, he was nicknamed “The Pocket Hercules” due to his short stature of 4ft 11inches.
Former U.S. swimmer Mark Spitz won seven gold medals at the 1972 Olympic Games which were held in Munich, Germany. Between 1965 and 1972, he won nine Olympic gold medals, one silver, and one bronze medal besides also winning five Pan American gold medals. In that period he set 33 world records.
Former athlete Alberto Juantorena (nicknames White Lightning and El Caballo — The Horse) won the 400m and 800m Olympic titles at Montreal. He set a world record in the 800m in which India’s Sriram Singh led for the first half. Later Juantorena said that it was Singh’s superb front running which set up the pace for the world record.
Six-time gold medal winning swimmer Michael Phelps has no opinion on the Olympics boycott call. He is focussed only on his training which is so intense that he has little time to be distracted. “Whatever happens, happens. I’m just getting myself as excited and as ready as I can, for the Olympic Games,” he said.
