Creativity unleashed Models of ‘Linking Rivers’ and ‘Inverted Room

Loud music and a bunch of happy youngsters greet you as you enter the School of Commerce and International Business, SCIB block, Dr. G.R. Damodaran College of Science. The walls and boards are covered with colourful posters, each calling for attentio n. The catchy phrases and art look appealing and you begin your tour of Creative Streaks, a window display competition organised for the eleventh consecutive year by the commerce students.

Fun game

First, management students impart knowledge on business through a fun game ‘Life is game’. The game is simple and takes you through various steps like Research and Development, production, marketing and logistics. The moment you step through the bamboo gates of the ‘Wild life reserve’ by III B.com (CA) students, you are transported to a jungle.

Trees, bushes, fallen twigs and dried leaves add to the effect.

These students stress on how important it is to conserve wild life’s natural habitat and not destroy it. For those who are enamoured by the cosmos, there is plenty to see.

Alien world

A simulation of a ‘Space shuttle’ made from scrap materials by the second year B.com students gives us a glimpse of the other world. You get to shake hands with a couple of aliens too.

Another group of students beckon you to join them in celebrating NASA’s 50th anniversary. There was a spectacular display on UV lights by a few E.com students. Ever wondered how the human race was during the pre-historic period? Then ‘Back to the Stone Age’, by I year E.com, introduces you to cave man. For a little bit of fun, step into ‘Mesmerize’ by II B.com and help Aladdin find his lamp!

Behind each display there is an inherent message. ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’, is the message that a bunch of earnest first years want to pass on.

Their display shows ways on how to reduce using non-biodegradable material, reuse matter and methods to recycle; all through a funky restaurant set-up. Their posters and props are trash and waste materials collected from the college.

‘A Spanish Fiesta’, ‘World of Egypt’, ‘Tree House’, ‘A divine experience’ and several other displays impress you with their fantastic use of colour and creativity. ‘Inverted room’ clearly tells us to look at life from a different perspective.

A talent show

Creative Streak was not just a talent show; the students campaigned for various causes such as female infanticide, cancer awareness and effects of mobile usage.

A touching video presentation on ‘Humanity’ put together by the final year B.comers makes us aware of persisting issues such as abandoned parents, child labour, the dying planet Earth and our insensitivity towards HIV positive patients.

Although the results are yet to be announced, winning or losing is not the criteria, it is the experience itself.
