A vital role

Playing Kasturi Sharbani Mukherjee

Sharbani Mukherjee speaks of her movie Mohandas — a Man Lost in His Own Nation at the Osian film festival.

Touching

Talking of the role of Kasturi, wife of Mohandas, Sharbani recalled her first meeting with the director, Vivek Priyadarshan. “There was this photograph of an Afghan girl amongst his collections. He showed it to me and said, ‘This is what I am looking for in Kasturi.’ The pain in those eyes touched me. Other than that, the script reminded me of Smita Patil. I had to work hard at learning the lifestyle of the village women.”

Sharbani is concerned about waning Indian traditions, “The movie however explores rural India where our sanskriti is alive. The Indian woman that I play is a strong woman who plays a vital role in the destiny of Mohandas.”
