Clean sweep

William Dalrymple and K.R. Usha among the winners

The Vodafone Crossword Book Award 2007, announced recently, saw Penguin India win quite a few brownie points. The publishing house has won in all three categories: A Girl and a River by Usha K.R. for best work in English fiction, The Last Mughal: The Fall of a Dynasty, Delhi, 1857 by William Dalrymple for best work in English non-fiction while the best work in Indian language fiction translation award was shared between Chowringhee by Sankar (translated by Arunava Sinha) and Govardhan’s Travels: A Novel by Anand (translated by Gita Krishnankutty). The awards carry a cash prize of Rs. 3 lakhs each, a trophy and a citation.

The shortlist comprised both debutant authors like Anjum Hasan, Namita Devidayal and renowned authors like William Dalrymple and Ramachandra Guha.
