Pacific – Reveries
CD, Rs. 245
A long time ago, someone said that disco was dead. Others said that it was dead and it would never come back. But Pacific’s debut album proves them all wrong. Their debut album “Reveries”, is virtually a call back into the glory day
s of disco. Or a blast from the past. Whichever you prefer. Think Abba with a more thumping bass and strong, hard electro beats.
Pacific is an act from Gothenberg, Sweden comprised of the musical stylisations of two life long friends, Danny and Bjorn. They have played a lot of live acts all over the European party scene. Pacific features retro 60’s and 70’s disco with modern electronica elements. A lot of synthesisers with club beats, synth melodies with dreamy vocals.
Pacific are well known for their tracks “Sunset Bvld”, “Number One” and “Hot Lips” which were released as singles last year and all make themselves at home on the 12 track CD.
The instrumental number “Runaway To Elsewhere” is a great track. Like the title suggests, this feel good dance track would make one just getaway to that magical place.
The track “Hold Me”, is reminiscent of the soundtrack from Japanese videogame series, “Final Fantasy”. Japan and Japanese culture is cited as one of the duos major influences and is evident in this hypothetical homage to an epic videogame series.
“Love Isn’t Always On Time” and “Poolside Bungalow” are trademark 60’s disco tunes. “Villanova Sunset” is another great instrumental track. “The Closes with Sunrise” which is a unique experimental blend of disco with country elements and then “Silent Running” which will instantly remind you of the theme from 80’s TV show “Doogie Howzer M.D.”
“Pacific” is a breath of fresh air in the angst-filled, overtly sexual trend recent electronica seems to be taking. It is perfect to just chill out too or play at a party or a nightclub.
So put on that crisp jacket that’s been hiding in your closet all these years, shine the dancing shoes and party with “Pacific”.
The Kooks – Konk
Virgin Records, CD, Rs. 350
The Kooks are at it again, two years after they released their debut album “Inside In/ Inside Out”. The Kooks are back with “Konk”, a 13-track album with a more mature and developed Kooks sound carefully overseen by legendary
producer Tony Hoffer who has worked with bands like Beck, Air and The Fratellis.
The CD starts of with “See the Sun”, a great catchy and upbeat opening track that you would play on a perfectly beautiful sunny day driving around with your top down and just taking in the city.
The 13-track album is full of uppers and downers and an occasional all out punk rock song thrown into the mix.
“Mr. Maker”, “Love It All”, “Sway”, “Shine On”, “One Last Time”, “Tick of Time” and “All Over Town” make up the slow, rather mellower punk rock stable of Konk.
But tracks like “Always Where I Need To Be” which is easily the most catchy track on the album and the highly suggestive, “Do You Wanna”, make up for the slow numbers with punk rock momentum, high energy and guitar riffs one would expect off a punk rock album.
“Stormy Weather” is an exceptional track on the CD showing a very mature and edgy style to The Kooks, something that they should capitalize on whenever they go back to the studio next.
All in all, Konk is a great album for punk rock lovers.
Don’t expect the Sex Pistols or the Ramones, but be witness to what could very well be the new face of punk rock.
