HIGH ON FASHION The NIFT show

Chennai now has more designs to choose from in footwear, bags, clothes, even upholstery and other lifestyle accessories. The credit for this goes to the fourthyear students of NIFT who came up with a gamut of innovative designs as part of their 22-week internship.

Design Collection 2008, NIFT's annual ostentatious event took place at the Le Royal Meridian. The weekend event saw models walk the ramp in creations by the students of Fashion Design, Accessory Design, Knitwear Design and Textile Design. The jamboree comprised hot models and equally hot merchandise and as the hunky/leggy models scorched the ramp, the audience were spoilt for choice. Naihaa, Colour Plus and Co-Optex too displayed some of their collection. But clearly, it was the NIFT-ians whose designs stole the limelight. The round displaying a collection of sporty footwear titled `Street Rider', had bright designs coupled with some exciting acrobatic skills. One of the rounds titled `See, Don't See,' which was introduced as the avant garde couture collection, had interesting black and white designs and a unique silhouette. This collection drew loud applause from the audience, as models paraded the ramp draped in prints which bring out optical illusion. One of the models, however had a tough time completing her ramp walk as her "unique" outfit kept obstructing her movement and it looked like Chennai would have its share of wardrobe malfunction with the model's footwear slipping out. Luckily for her and the show, she managed to avert a disaster. `Bring back the Bow', `Urban Cobwebs,' `Glitter Bugs,' `Aqua Reflection' too had some interesting designs and seemed to be a hit with the crowd.

Many rounds later the audience were beginning to get a tad tired with the flood of designs. Just when a few of them were inching their way out a group of little ones displayed clothes for children between the ages of three and five.

The grand show ended with the distribution of prizes to outstanding students and designs of the year. S. Devadoss, Director, NIFT, A. Sakthivel, member of the Board of Governors, NIFT, President of Tiruppur Exporters Association and President of Federation of Indian Exporters Association Southern Region and guest of honour, Viswanath Shegoankar, Secretary to Government of Tamil Nadu, Department of Handlooms, Handicraft, Textiles and Khadi, offered their congratulations.
