This four CD collection is a wholesome anthology of jazz from the land of the Danube. While the first two cover modern Jazz, CD 3 combines ethno jazz with the avant-garde. CD 4 is vocal jazz with space dedicated to both youth jazz and old-timer jazz. With exhaustive notes for every number, it gives valuable context to the music. While it is hard to pinpoint single tracks, CD 3 is the most interesting. Here ethnic sounds merge with pure jazz, creating surprising yet startling sounds. This "world sound" incorporates Hungarian and Eastern folk music with mainstream jazz. Folk instruments like the woodwind instrument tarogato, folk flutes and a kaval, (a flute, which is associated with mountain shepherds) are used creatively. The tunes of Roman gypsy jazz create indigenous sounds, which make their presence felt through suggestion rather than assertion.
