A toast to wine

In moderation wine is healthy. When you look at it as a health drink, its benefits are plenty.

Health benefits of wine

"Quickly, bring me a beaker of wine so that I may wet my brain and say something clever" — Aristophanes.

Fine wine is a feast for all the senses including the mind. The Bible often makes references to the value of wine for health and enjoyment. Wine has the power to inhibit the growth of all types of micro-organisms that causes diseases in humans. Numerous studies show that moderate consumption— one or two ounces of wine a day, preferably with meal, reduced the risk of heart diseases. Recent studies show that ingredients in the red wine may hold a key to protecting us from cancer and age related diseases. Bioflavonoids, phenols, tannins and other compounds give wine its flavour and health properties. Tannins can inhibit the growth of bacteria on the teeth and may prevent cavity formation. Wine is to be consumed in moderation only.

Health hazards of wine

Over consumption of wine may increase the risk of obesity, stroke, breast cancer, elevated blood pressure, alcoholism, cirrhosis and other liver disorders. Most wines contain sulphites and preservatives that can trigger allergies and migraine headaches in some people and increase the risk of a rare type of stroke.
