And another gallery for art

Kochi's growing art scene gets a fillip with the opening of Eka, `The Art Gallery'

NEW CANVAS The opening of Eka, The Art Gallery, provides another platform to showcase art

Eka, The Art Gallery, is one more to the growing list of art galleries in Kochi. It leaves us to think, does this upcoming city really have the capacity and potential to accommodate art as an integral part of its life? To many, for whom art is a passion, the answer seems to be an intention to offer it a platform to growand then for it to seep into the very being of people. The very reason four upcoming artists of Kochi, Shihab, Madhu, Biju kumar and Venu put their hearts together to promote art, and thus open a gallery at

Kunnumpuram, Fort Kochi.

Appreciating art

A gallery where people can visualise art from a different perspective, admire and maybe, even, criticise the artist's feelings and beliefs that have been portrayed on canvas. "To allow ordinary folk to understand that art and appreciation of it does not belong to any particular section of society, but like music maybe felt, perhaps even touched in emotion."

With 13 participants exhibiting their works, some popular, others in the throes of establishing a name in the field, the gallery is robust with colour and style. Mohandas N. N.'s acrylics titled `Pigeons' bring forth texture and hues, shown realistically yet avoiding the plainness and monotony of that which could come with it.

In Wifred K.P's watercolours of a fence, the painting shows a play of light and shadow, while works of Kabitha Mukhopadhayay titled `The Promised Land' in blues and yellow evokes an emotion of a distant dream barred by the realities and pains of life. Rajan M. Krishnan has exhibited a fine acrylic work titled `Root', a close up of which against a background of black painted in subtle detail, throws light on the artist's exposure and touch with world's various trends towards art, the beauty of three dimensional realism. He emphasises the need for local artists to be aware of the progress in other Metros like Mumbai or Delhi, "lest they be left behind."

To many, the addition of one more art centre is yet another stepping stone towards making Kochi a recognizable centre for art and culture, for, they believe, "it is only a matter of time."
