Notes on Krishna

Gopala

Universal, Rs.45

EVEN IF you are not a fan of vocalist Shubha Mudgal, you would surely fall for this album. For the sheer love of devotional musicality.

With just six bhajans, it straightaway touches the heartstrings, elevating you to a different scale of thought. Classically, each of its rhythms is so strong, you tend to drown in it, effortlessly. The best of the lot perhaps are "Gokul Ki Panihari" with lyrics by Nand Das and "Bharat Mere Nain Mein Pichkari", a Meera bhajan.

The bhajan "Dhare Baanki Paag" with lyrics again by Nand Das, is also a winner, though on a rather slow and serious note.A must to give you company musically at the crack of dawn, the descent of dusk and more. And a gem for the Janmashtami festival.

Is Kalyug Mein Aaye Shyam Ka Naam

T Series, Rs.35

HERE IS another timely cassette on Krishan Bhajan released on the eve of Janmashtami, and aptly carrying the title, "Is Kalyug Mein Aaye Kaam Shyam Ka Naam". Yet again, it is one of those cassettes that one gets to hear, rather quite loudly, during the festive season. The cassette has seven songs - three on side A and four on side B - and most of them are pretty nice to hear.

Of course when there is Anup Jalota one usually does not expect frivolous or jarring stuff. Indeed his very first song, "Krishna Krishna Bolo" is a fine bhajan sung in a voice autographed Jalota all over. Again his other song, "Janme Hai Krishna" is quite good. But more than Jalota, it is Tulsi-Shivaani who acquits herself well. She has a lovely voice that is ideally suited for bhajans. Ironically, the meaningful title song "Is Kalyug Mein Aaye... " worded beautifully, isn't the pick of the offering. At best it is just passable.
