It's the backpacks and messenger bags that are used by the college students now. According to Midhilaj of Top Max and Annarkali of Jute Bags, jute bags are slowly gaining popularity among the girls. Another bag girls love is the tote bag. The backpacks range anything between Rs.150 and Rs.900 while the messenger bags could be had for as little as Rs.120 or as much as Rs. 500. Tote bags and jute ones start at Rs.200.
According to Ibrahim, a salesman in Kannan departmental store, boys prefer backpacks while girls like messenger bags more. “Girls look for style while the boys are concerned about buying a bag that is portable.” Naveen an electronics engineering student of Karpugam College prefers a backpack. “The backpack is easier to carry on the bike and I can even use it to carry my laptop,” he says. Shantini from the same college carries a messenger bag. “I don't have a lot of books to carry and it's also very stylish. For my laptop I use a laptop bag.”
What's your need?
Choosing a bag depends on what your requirements are. The backpack is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the books you have to carry or the portability.
This bag can double as a laptop bag, is spacious and waterproof. But, they may not come in too many designs and styles.
So, if you are looking for a bag that is more about style, then it is the tote bag for you. These bags come in many colours and styles from the basic black leather to funky hot pink. But, if you use a bike to travel and need to carry more load, then the backpack scores.
A compromise between the tote bag and the backpack is the messenger bag. This works for those who need to make a style statement and don't carry too many things around.
