Driver was drunk
A city court on June 14 sentenced a 22-year-old youth to 15 days judicial custody in connection with a fatal road accident in Chromepet on Tuesday last. The youth was riding his motorcycle under the influence of liquor, when he lost control, skidded off the road and fell along with the pillion rider, who died on the spot. S. Dinakaran, Inspector of Police, St. Thomas Mount Traffic (Investigation), told Downtown that Sridhar Ayyanar of New Colony in Chromepet, was a carpenter. He was a close friend of Thamaraikannan, a construction worker, and a resident of the same locality. On June 13, Ayyanar was travelling at a high speed on his Bajaj Discover motorcycle with Thamaraikannan seated on the pillion. He was travelling below the road-over-bridge at MIT Gate and took a sharp left turn to reach New Colony, when he lost control of the motorcycle that skidded off the road, throwing them both on the road. Ayyanar sustained minor injuries and escaped, while Thamaraikannan died on the spot. The victim is survived by his wife Mariammal, their four-year-old son and eight-month-old girl twins.
A case was registered under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), Mr. Dinakaran said, adding that Jayasuriya, Judge, Fast Track Court, Alandur, sentenced Ayyanar to 15 days judicial custody and remanded in Puzhal prison.
