The 69th Primetime Emmy Awards took place on Sunday and while we know who the winners are, fashion geeks around the world were busy jotting down their own notes. From feathers, flowers, and sequins to technicolour outfits and garish jewellery, the red carpet surely saw some of the best and the worst trends. Here’s our list of hits and misses.

HITS

Red Hot

Nicole Kidman almost always makes it to our best dressed list and she didn’t let us down at the Emmy’s this time. Decked in a perky red Calvin Klein by Appointment halter dress in a flowy, ankle-length style, we couldn’t take our eyes off the contemporary luminous knot detailing on the neck of her otherwise classic gown. We kind of liked her mismatched pink sandals too. Another lady in red who stunned us was Gina Rodriquez who wore a fiery red Naeem Khan gown with a plunging neckline and intricate sequin work.

Flower Power

Laura Dern was quite the winner this year. She looked fabulous in a black and silver floral-embroidered cutout dress by American fashion designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler. Julianne Hough was quite the vision in that black Marchesa ball gown that had soft pink flowers strewn across the bodice.

Chasing Rainbows

It’s always fun to watch out for what the younger stars wear to award ceremonies and Kiernan Shipka, all of 17, killed it with her capricious nude tulle gown by Miu Miu. The straps and waistline of the dress featured some understated rainbow sparkle. And of course, we’re totally digging the rainbow feathered dress that Zoe Kravitz wore.

Wow in Velvet

Shailene Woodley dressed like no other in a super chic green velvet number from Ralph Lauren. We loved the strappy open back feature. And she channelled Boho vibes with her hair loosely pulled back and those lovely wishbone-style earrings.

Bling it On!

Kudos to Anna Chlumsky who looked like she’d taken a dip in liquid metal, a very fashion forward trend. The all-silver sequin Sachi and Babi ensemble was definitely a knockout. Jessica Biel stole our hearts in that sexy and shimmery Ralph and Russo Couture dress. She showed the world how thigh-high slits must be worn. The sheer train was magnificent as were her Forevermark diamond jewellery and glittering Stuart Weitzman shoes.

MISSES

Foul Feather Weather

While there’s no denying that stars like Keri Russel pulled off the feathered hemline look exceptionally well, there were far too many who were a complete let down. Tracee Ellis Ross had too much going on, what with all the sequins, those billowing sleeves, and that feathered hemline. While her makeup and hair was on point, we didn’t quite like Priyanka Chopra’s white feathered Balmain gown that had crystal embellishments and a white feathered hemline.

White and Wrong

We’re not exactly sure about what Sofia Vergara was thinking when she got into that white mermaid-style Mark Zunino gown that would’ve got a fanfare at a wedding and not on the Emmy’s red carpet.

OTT Accessorising

Heidi Klum looked great but those awfully large earrings and bangles weighed her look down majorly. Too bad it wasn’t Jane Fonda’s night either. The jewellery she wore didn’t quite complement her magenta gown. What’s worse is that her gemstone necklace had an entire row going down her back. How weird is that, really?

In the Jungle

Ariel Winter was easily the biggest sartorial disaster on the red carpet. There was nothing right about her overly daring double-slit Zuhair Murad gown that featured tacky animal-print-esque sequin detailing and that obnoxious choker-style halter neck.

Half and Half Hotchpotch

Ajiona Alexus had us all confused in the bizarre white jumpsuit that featured a train on one leg and that had a corset-style top that. Was that meant to be a jumpsuit or a gown? Or both? Maybe we’ll never know!
