The cycle of our lives

It is time to assume responsibility for our lives

India is steeped in beliefs, rituals and faiths, which seem to control our everyday living. Traditions and culture is ingrained in our very personality. India is not an ideal country. There is abject poverty, homelessness, sickness, exploitation and endless suffering. Some marvel at the way they see people suffer so gracefully and joyfully, while some are angry at the indifference of our government or fellow men.

Long ago, I would feel so upset when I watched people live with literally nothing, especially children without food, clothes or a home. A plethora of feelings would go through me…from anger to guilt; from sadness to questioning God; from frustration to helplessness. Then I searched for answers, which I was sure was there if we looked for it.

These are my discoveries: our birth is by chance, our life is by choice, and where we are now is exactly where we want to be.

Now chance could be either because of destiny, fate, karma or just a coincidence, but how do you explain your circumstances you are born in? Is there any explanation for children being born with illnesses – both physical and mental? Or for children born in luxuries and all opportunities that life can give? The only question that comes to my mind is: is this a payback for past deeds? Or does bad beget bad and good beget good? It is said that our soul or atma is the account holder of our deeds and at some time or the other, in some life or the other we have to pay the price. What do we mean by bad deeds? They are actions done intentionally to harm, hurt or kill others without provocation. Whether it is punished or not by the law of the land, there is a higher court that will decide. The higher court sees no religion, status, bank balance, connections, age or gender. There is no bribing, threatening or using high influence. There are no lawyers nor is there a trial. It’s just between you, your actions and the judge – who is impartial and unbiased. He doesn’t play games nor does he show any favouritism. All he has on his table is your life as you have lead. However short or long doesn’t matter. It all depends on what you did and what you didn’t. And that is what we serve in our present life.

Now do we blame fate (which was created by us) or do we assume responsibility?
