Importance of obedience

June 13, 2012 09:52 pm | Updated July 12, 2016 02:51 am IST - Chennai:

Rama asked Lakshmana to build a hut for Him, and left the decision of how to go about it to Lakshmana. Lakshmana who had the utmost reverence for his brother, was overawed by Rama's request, for he wanted to take instructions from Rama, and did not expect to make any decisions himself.

The Lord, by leaving the decision to Lakshmana showed the importance He gives to devotees. The Lord is bound by our love for Him and He does not see Himself as a master in the presence of His devotees, said Gomatam Sampathkumarachariar. When Vibhishana came to the Lord seeking refuge, the Lord consulted those around Him. It was not as if He was incapable of making up His mind about what should be done. His consulting the monkeys was to show the regard He had for those who pledged allegiance to Him.

While Rama's obedience to His father is legendary, Lord Narayana was an even more obedient son in another avatara of His. As Rama, the Lord appeared with only two hands, but when He was born as Krishna, He appeared with four hands, and with His weapons, and with all kinds of ornaments. Devaki took fright when she saw the baby, for she was afraid that if Kamsa saw the obvious divinity of the child, he would harm the baby. In this respect, Devaki worried as any mother would, for a mother is always anxious about the safety and well-being of her children. Devaki, because of her concern for the baby's safety, asked Krishna to hide His weapons and to appear with only two hands. The Lord, the incarnation of the Paramatma, could well have told Devaki that considering who He was, no harm would befall Him. But He did not object. He did not question Devaki. He did not think her concern was of no account. He obeyed her implicitly, and made his weapons disappear from sight and appeared with just two hands, so that He looked like any other baby.

Rama's obedience was evident when He went to the forest upon His father's order.

But Krishna's obedience was evident at a much younger age. He was obedient even when He was only an infant, only a few hours old.
