On career choices, a lot has been said. Usually, in fact, people say a lot. Some say a lot of baloney, and some other people say a lot that makes sense and is then proceeded to be marked baloney. Most people follow the herd more often than not, and end up treating their myriad family members for free or having a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering and being unable to fix that light in the room.
Variety
Funky subjects like art ( often called fine arts) are for the chic chicks, history is for boring people, Literature - heaven forbid! “Didn't you get admission in any other college or course?” people will ask you, dripping with pseudo-sympathy. They then push you aside to talk of “our Bindu, who is in the prestigious St. Somebody-or-the-other's Medical College”.
Choices
I never believed in walking the road that has been travelled too many times. There are thousands of fields out there needing development and research. There are so many subjects, so many choices, so much we can do, that it's mind boggling! And people have the freedom to choose - they just have to think for themselves and make their own decisions. It's also important that we have more people in the social sciences .The need of the hour is emotional satisfaction and good interpersonal relationships, not just landing a high profile job.
Bindu's fierce and protective Mom catches my stifled yawn and rounds on me, glaring. “And what do you do, my dear? B.E.? B.Tech?” she demands. “Why, no aunty”, I reply, feigning surprise, “I'm doing my Bachelors in Psychology.” Silence falls. The mother looks at me, taken aback and then laughs uncertainly, “Haha...Psychology? ... Can you read my mind? ”“Sure I can”, I reply with a grin.
