The Short Second Life Of Bree Tanner, a novella by Stephenie Meyer tells the story of Bree Tanner, a vampire first featured in The Twilight Saga's Eclipse.
The novella, primarily set in Seattle, is told from the viewpoint of Bree, a new born vampire who narrates her journey along with the members of her coven and vampire army as they unknowingly prepare to close in on Bella Swan and the Cullens.
Riley, the coven's leader whose main job was to lure humans, had captured Bree and probably the other members of the coven and taken them to their mysterious creator known to them only as ‘her'. Little did they know, they were entangled in a maze larger than they could have ever imagined.
Dark kingdom
Bree possesses the typical characteristics of a new-born vampire, the most prominent being the unflinching thirst for blood. Out one night to satisfy her burning thirst, Bree meets Diego, considered to be Riley's right-hand man. Initially, it was Bree's belief that the only way to stay alive in Riley's crowd was to keep your head low and not draw attention to yourself.
But she couldn't help but be around Diego who was not only older than most of the others but also far more experienced. Bree felt a strange sense of comfort and familiarity being around him. To avoid the prying eyes of the other coven members, they avoided each other and acted aloof.
Soon they realise that there is more to the picture than what Riley is letting on. He had kept his coven in the dark about many things, the most important being information about their creator. Following him on his visit to ‘her', Bree and Diego uncover numerous and devastating secrets. They realise the ulterior motives of Riley and his self-centered interest in the coven.
The author undoubtedly captures the reader's attention in the last 50 pages or so. Unraveling deception, lies and betrayal, Bree realises the truth behind her existence and inanimateness. The ‘second' life of Bree, a blend of secrecy, passion and illusion has added another perspective to the Twilight series. Though a small and trivial character inEclipse , she is sure to capture the hearts of diehard Twilight fans.
