The workshop organised on Martyrs' Day by the NSS volunteers of the Stella Maris College, Chennai, on “Peace Education based on Gandhian attitude and actions for empowering children to undertake micro actions for peace” proved to be successful.
Thirty student volunteers of NSS prepared lessons on the following topics: The urgency of imparting peace education to our children and its relevance; Gandhian attitude and actions for peace that can be adopted by the youth; and the micro actions that the youth can undertake now for peace.
The programme became lively with the power-point presentations including screening of clippings from Gandhiji's Salt Satyagraha March and how Gandhiji took on the role of the manual worker — as a cook, barber, scavenger, washer man, etc.
Micro actions for peace were presented as a concrete suggestion plan to resolve conflicts in the form of skits by students from various schools.
All the youth took a pledge that they would respect manual work, manual labourers; prefer to buy the products from manual labour based production. And they all decided to become self-reliant by doing their daily chores by themselves.
This event was a culmination of the Peace Education project launched by the Gandhi Peace Foundation-Madras in 10 local schools this year and each volunteer took more than 15 classes in each school and five hundred students benefitted from this project.
College students are invited to join this project and promote a culture of peace among the youth.
