Some hands constantly raised at the recent Murugappa Madras Quotient Quiz 2012, in which 63 schools from across the city took part.

And at the end of an intense three-hour prelims and final, the trio from Vidya Mandir went back as winners, with teams from P.S. Senior Secondary and Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan (Nungambakkam) finishing second and third.

The second edition of the quiz saw Vani Mahal, the venue, bursting with students eagerly awaiting the preliminary rounds. The theme of the quiz was Chennai — its past, present and future.

Special address

The prelims had 30 questions, and the quiz was conducted by popular quizzer Navin Jayakumar. One of the questions was ‘Which couple lives at No. 12, North Mada Street, Mylapore?’. The answer — Lord Kapaleeshwara and Karpagambal.

Out of the 212 teams, six teams — one each from Jawahar Vidyalaya, National Public School, Vidya Mandir, Chinmaya Vidyalaya, P.S. Senior Secondary and PSBB, Nungambakkam — grabbed their places on stage for the finals. The questions for each round were based on a different theme — history, present, forever Madras (things that are synonymous with the city). The questions ranged from P. James and turtle walk to the Emden bombing in 1914.

There was even a ‘Pin Points’ round, where the participants had to identify areas through their pincodes, roads along with their present and past names. In the theme round, 30 images were shown, and a link to the city had to be established. Each round was interspersed with questions to the audience, who had to SMS the answers. Mobile numbers that answered the most number of correct answers were given prizes.

The most creative team names were ‘Enga Vegam Usain Boltin Sogam’, ‘Marwadi, Iyer and the Brain’, ‘Sathyama Naanga Chennai Pasanga Than Da’.
