With so many weddings around, gifting options are always welcome. And, the colourful and innovative items at the ongoing Rajasthan Handicrafts Fair seem just perfect for gifts. For instance, the charming antique elephant kadam wood stools with embossed brass work on the trunk, ears and howdah cloth.
Or, the trays, candle stands, clock faces and tables embellished with embossed brass work, an example of innovative artisanship. Exquisitely painted and carved ‘jharokhas’ and elephants bring more such craft flavours of Rajasthan to the fair. Choose from laq bangles, silk paintings and much else. There are also trendy painted marble dust Ganeshas and classic Buddhas, Sandur’s embroidered and mirror-studded hand bags, the equally colourful Banjara embroidery party bags, palm leaf art from Orissa and wall-hangings with dhokra work. Also on view are Aligarh’s moulded brass lamps and door knockers, Channapatna artefacts in natural colours and intricate wood carving from Andhra Pradesh. Not to be missed is a spread of beautifully painted clay jewellery from Orissa, in both traditional and contemporary formats. There are ikat saris with striking motifs of larger-than-life flowers, fish, frolicking birds and animals dramatically covering both body and pallu. And, there’s still more. Head to the fair!
(The fair is on at Sri Sankara Hall, TTK Road, Teynampet till June 30th June)
