Making sense of fashion trends is difficult enough. Following them is even more. Why Kareena Kapoor experiments with her weight or why Lady Gaga is the way she is — these are some questions one should never ask.
Irrespective of red carpet fashion or other trends that fashion purists seem to follow, street fashion has a life of its own.
This year it was the androgynous look that was celebrated the most.
While more colours invaded the boys' wardrobe, the girls opted for some masculine cuts.
Here are some of the trends that ruled the local fashion scene this year.
Owl accessories
The credit definitely goes to Harry Potter for making owls look cool and trendy. It was not just a handful of kids clamoring for pet owls; but owls were all of a sudden found on lockets, rings, earrings, handbags, T-shirts and also on cute pyjamas. Not just the high end designer accessories from Mod, Aldo, Marc Jacobs; the vintage owl lockets can be as cheap as Rs. 100, found in any roadside shop. So forget what they say about owl bringing bad luck and grab your owl accessories if you already haven't done so.
Jholas with a difference
Instead of a sleek handbag, it's the funky ethno-cool jholas that were a rage this year.
These jholas not just come in a range of colours but also with a lot of ethnic work like gurjari, sequins and mirror work. Many sport messages of their favourite causes on the jholas in order to spread the good word while some prefer witty quotes.
Check shirts
Checks were never really out of fashion, for both formal and casual wear. In fact, this year marked the rediscovery of roll up sleeve check shirts, which women of all age groups embraced.
Tunic shirts and shirt dresses teamed with funky accessories served both for office wear or casual street wear. While for men's wear, more colours were added to the check shirts. Men were seen sporting some envious shades like mauve, violet or even pink while shades of blues, green and greys dominated women's shirts.
Flip-flops
Chic flip-flops fit Indian weather conditions perfectly. Though gladiators, wedges and flat-forms are popular, flip-flops with a funky beetle or a frog or a parrot on the straps have become must-haves among youngsters. Not just animal cartoons, a lot of youngsters prefer fancy designs on their straps and many are getting their flip-flops custom made based on the look they want. The possibilities of playing with your flip-flop designs are endless and fun.
Anna Hazare topi
Talking about causes, Anna Hazare made an impact on the world of fashion this year. His topi made a fashion statement and it was indeed an easy accessory to show support to the fight against corruption.
The Gandhi topi was also incorporated by many fashion designers as part of their collection.
Geek glasses
Geeks might not be making fashion statements with their clothes but geek glasses are definitely hot.
Nerd glasses come in a lot of fun frames and many youngsters are sporting them without lenses. Celebrities like Johnny Depp, Justin Timberlake, and Madonna were seen with geek glasses.
Wear your attitude
While the You Tube video of Kolaveri Di was trending online, some of the T-shirt manufacturers came out with Kolaveri T-shirts the very next day. Name any event and you have a t-shirt ready for it.
And there are plenty of online stores where you can design and customise your own T-shirts. Not just T-shirts, you can also order customised boxer shorts online.
Jodhpuri pants
Move over harem pants because Jodhpuri pants have come out of royal palaces and have invaded street fashion.
If you have admired Ranbir Kapoor's look in Rockstar then Jodhpuri teamed with a funky T-shirt or kurti is the way to go.
Girls can experiment with colours and prints to get the casual but chic look.
