Save water

July 16, 2012 05:05 pm | Updated 05:05 pm IST

We went on an excursion to see how rainwater is harvested. Mr. Sekhar, Director of the Rain Centre, asked us questions about how we get water in our homes. He explained that metro water comes from Red Hills, Sholavaram, Poondi, Chembarambakkam and the Telugu Ganga Project.

He showed us a model of a rainwater harvesting building. Then he showed us how rainwater is harvested at the Rain Centre and explained how we can save rain water. First there was a pipe that was attached to the roof. When it rains, the water slides off the slanted roof and into the pipe. Then the water is in the filtration tank which filters the water. In it there is a layer of rocks and then gravel and last of all sand. The filtered water is then stored in a well which is a normal well. We can use the water in it. Mr. Sekhar showed us a tank near the roof. There is a small pipe attached to it which takes the water into the bathroom. He gets direct water in the bathroom. We learned a lot that day and it was fun!
