With training in computer skills, these students can look to a brighter future.

The Gottimukkala Suryanaranayana Raju Municipal High School in Vijayawada turned a new chapter a couple of weeks ago when it became a part of "Unnati", a corporate social responsibility initiative of the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL). The school, which did not even have sufficient class rooms, now has 10 computers with a good laboratory.

Master tactics

The happy face of Krishna Babu, a Std. X student of the school, tells what change computers can bring to the evolving personalities of students. "Computers are the biggest attraction to come to school. We are learning new things," he says. Kavitha, his peer, says they aim not to miss an opportunity to be at the computer laboratory. They plan to spend as much time as possible in the laboratory to master the computers. The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) selected the GSRM High School as it is one of the schools that secured highest pass percentage in last year SSC examinations.

HPCL Director (HR) Vizia Saradhi says his company plans to spend two per cent of the profits towards corporate social responsibility. And, "Unnati" is one of the schemes aimed at spreading computer literacy in municipal schools.

Under the scheme, the HPCL will provide 10 computers with accessories to each school and train students in basic computer skills by engaging the resource persons from NIIT. The students would have to undergo a six-month course, after the completion of which they would be issued a certificate by the NIIT.

Municipal Commissioner P.S. Pradyumna says that 88 computers would be provided in the high schools managed by the Corporation. Students of municipal schools have also been getting computers and training, thanks to the projects taken up by the NIIT directly.
