One would think that comics have outlived their utility among young children of today, brought up in an era where new gadgets are launched every day and diversions such as the social media, the Internet, and 24/7 programming on television. That was not apparent judging by the response that one encountered at a quiz conducted on Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle characters conducted at the Easy Library recently.
Tinkle, with the accidental hunter Shikari Shambu, the bumbling simpleton Suppandi and the ever plotting Tantri commanded a huge following a decade ago. The characters may have changed, new ones may have made their appearance, but the essence of the tales — humour mixed with life values — has survived the test of time.
Divided into eight teams, with an adult supervising most teams of three members each, it was the children who stole the show at the quiz. Even the most complex questions on Indian mythology were answered with ease by the children, even as the adults racked their brains, occasionally muddling up characters and even interchanging mythological epics.
As far as the questions about Tinkle characters were concerned, many of the questions were met with everyone shouting out the answers in unison. The smaller children were also adept at answering questions about the minute details of Tinkle tales, and a host of topics, including the species of some crustaceans and the investigative abilities of some of a key investigative team in the series was also discussed in great detail. >EasyLib.com
The quiz was held as part of a literary initiative for children “Catch Them Young” started by Easy Library.
Vani Mahesh, the founder of EasyLib.com believes that children must be exposed to various forms of literature as early as possible to groom them into well-rounded readers. Visit >www.EasyLib.com for more details.
