Easter is a special time and as it falls on a Sunday you can plan out a day of fun and excitement. Invite your gang of friends to share the happiness of Easter. A little gift is a good idea.

Make a funny Easter bunny that they can keep as a book mark.

Funny bunny

You will need: Flat wood ice cream spoons – 2 per bunny; 1 white cloth strip per bunny; pink colour pencil; gray or black colour pencil; small plastic wiggle eyes – 2 per bunny (if you can buy them in a craft shop) or you can draw them; a small piece of pink or white yarn; glue

How to make it: Colour the spoons with the colour pencil. Place the spoons on top of each other and at an angle to make the ear so that the two ends will be the ear and the other end will be the face. Glue it firmly. Cut the white strip in half. Paste it on to the rabbit ears, to make the inside of the ear. Tie a knot in the centre of the yarn. These are the whiskers and the nose. Then glue the yarn nose and whiskers in place. Glue the eyes on or draw it and the mouth.

Grow a bunny

You will need: A one-litre carton; poster board or card stock paper; paper; stapler; soil; mustard or fenugreek seeds; plastic wrap

Method: Cut and decorate the carton with paper or acrylic paint. Make a handle with poster board and staple it. Fill your container with soil and sprinkle the seeds in. Water and cover with plastic wrap, or put in a large bag. Let the basket sit in the sun and wait for the seeds to sprout. These baskets can be planted in the garden after Easter. To avoid excess wateri use a spray bottle to mist. The seeds must be kept moist but not soaked.

How about a few games?

Easter Bunny, Easter Bunny, Where's Your Egg?

Cut a large paper egg. The players form a circle with one child in the middle as the bunny. He covers his eyes while a player is selected to sit on the egg. Then the players chant, “Easter Bunny, Easter Bunny, where's your egg? Somebody stole it from your home!” The Easter bunny then has three guesses to find out who is sitting on the egg. If the guess is right then the child becomes the new bunny in the middle. This goes on till the circle of “sitters” is over.

Fluffy Needs a Tail

Draw a tailless rabbit on poster board. The children, blindfolded, will take turns “Pinning the Tail” on the bunny.

The tail can be large cotton balls or pom-poms with tape.

Easter Bunny Salad

Ingredients: Apple halves; Raisins; Miniature marshmallows or cottage cheese; Lettuce; Almonds

Place a lettuce leaf on a plate. Add the apple half on lettuce, for body. Insert raisins for the eyes and nose. The ears are made from apples slices or almonds and a miniature marshmallow or cottage cheese becomes the bushy tail. You can make individual salads for each of your friends.

Tradition : Easter eggs

Before decorating your eggs, boil them. The eggs must be completely cool and dry, to decorate successfully. Combine 1/2 to 1 tablespoon of food colouring with two teaspoons of vinegar in a cup that is deep enough for the eggs. Add water to about the half way point. Gently place the eggs into the cups. The longer they are left in the dye, the darker the shade. Experiment with colours. Let it dry.

You can try it out with natural dyes too. Combine the dye source with 1/2 tablespoon of vinegar with some cold water in a saucepan. Add raw eggs (make sure there's enough water to cover the eggs) and bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer 10 to 15 minutes. The longer you simmer, the darker the colour.

Beetroot for red, spinach for green, turmeric for yellow, tea for brown.
