The kitchen, they say, is the heart of the home. Regardless of whether you cook or not, this room is an important part of the house. This summer, we give you a list of ten accessories that aren’t really must-haves but are pretty good to have.

1A sitting area

There’s a lot that can happen over a cup of coffee or a pot of pasta. A small seating arrangement serves you well: chat with family, catch up on work emails, plan that holiday or even supervise the kids’ homework.

2An open shelving system

Sure, it’s a pain to clean and all that but nothing looks as good as colourful pottery or china on white shelves. Or white china on shelves painted a vibrant colour.

3A statement lighting fixture

The kitchen is the last place where you would expect to find a stylish lighting fixture but don’t deprive it of one. A crystal chandelier creates a glam kitchen at the click of a switch.

4A magnetic knife rack

There’s not much to this kitchen fixture — just a long magnetic strip you can hang somewhere high — but it creates a chef-like vibe in a jiffy. Keep your knives where you can see them and never waste time looking for them.

5An oil spoon rest

We’re all used to adding in gredients and putting our spoons on the kitchen counter. But a spoon that you use to measure out oil — or ghee — can create a mess. Avoid by investing in a colourful oil spoon rest.

6A smart tablet mount

With all of us now budding masterchefs, the tablet has become a fixture in the kitchen for go-to recipes and videos. A tablet mount keeps your device up and away from any counter-top messes.

7A small book rack

The tablet’s there, but most of us tend to splurge on cookbooks as well. Devote a little space to them — be it a shelf or a cabinet — and keep adding over the years. Ensure that the book space is far from humid/hot areas.

8Shelf for stemware

There’s something about this little functional piece that adds immense style to any kitchen. Perhaps it’s because it creates a diner-like vibe. Fit one under a cabinet and slide your stemware in.

9A funky wine rack

If you have a stemware shelf, a wine rack is called for. It can be horizontal or vertical, open or closed. Refrigerated racks are also available and can add glamour to the workroom of your home.

10A great coffee maker

Be it an espresso machine or a French press, a coffee maker

contributes to kitchen’s style quotient. They come in every price rangeand type, so pick up the one that can get you your java fix on your budget.
