Suket Dhir

Winner of The International Woolmark Prize 2015-2016, his menswear brand is Indo-centric and contemporary

Signature Style: It combines artisanal techniques and luxurious fabrics in classic silhouettes. Each garment is crafted from high quality sustainable materials and is hand woven by the mulmul weavers of West Bengal

Fashion in India: India leads the trend of conscious clothing and sustainable fashion globally and it is time that we recognise and take credit for it.

Inspiration: His label was born out of looking at himself in the mirror and contemplating what he would like to wear and what makes him feel and look good.

The Season’s Trend: A beautiful fit, comfortable and not shabby. He aims to create versatile, trans-seasonal clothing and this is where cool wool plays a major role. Men need low maintenance clothing and sharp fits and this is exactly what cool wool does. Handwoven lightweight fabric made out of cool wool is luxurious and has the necessary strength to be a natural choice for men’s clothing.

Fashion in India: India is creating its own style and identity rather than following the world and has been evolving faster than ever to compete with the global market.

Inspiration: The urban youth

This season’s trends : Bold, unexpected cuts and prints in the form of reinvented classics.

Coimbatore, he thinks, is an unexplored customer base and he is looking forward to changing the perception of fashion in the minds of young customers.

Known for his long-standing affair with luxury and specialises in unconventional textures and embroideries.

Signature Style: Fresh and contemporary and inspired by India’s rich cultural and crafts heritage where he revives forgotten crafts. His work is known for its hand-cut appliqué and detailed finishing with custom-designed serrated piping.

Fashion in India: While India is definitely keeping pace with the rest of the world, there is still a need to innovate and experiment to create a global impact.

Inspiration: I grew up watching and then working with Carol Gracias, Laxmi Rana, Sonalika Sahay... They will always be my muses.

The season’s trend: Layer — whether in summer or winter — and keep it easy with a play on colours. He has used the finest merino wool yarn to create sheer wool-blend fabric and has also used wool yarn for embroidery.

Kochhar hopes his show in Coimbatore will bring to life India’s unsung traditions.
