Ring in the new with the old

Repurpose kurtis, kanjeevaram saris and anarkalis and make a fashion statement this Ugadi

We are almost four months into the New Year, but today is just as special. Traditionally observed in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, Ugadi brings with it its own share of festivities and occasions to dress up. Bring in the New Year by repurposing items of clothing.

According to fashion designer, Aditi Lal, “A kanjeevaram sari could be converted into a skirt and paired with a bold-coloured crop top. Also, a blouse converted into a nice anarkali, with a flowy chiffon base, that would look lovely for the summery festivities.”

“I’d choose to repurpose the kurti that is so versatile and the sari that speaks of culture and heritage in its own way,” says stylist and blogger, Pranita Mehta.

“Leggings can take a break. Kurtis could instead be worn over long skirts with or without a dupatta. As for saris, whenever I wear them, I go for modern stretchable blouses that need no stitching and multiple trips to the tailor! My personal favourite is a long lacy nude colour blouse that can be tucked inside the sari, pretty much like a t-shirt. It saves the look from being too conventional,” she adds.

Long kurtas worn over palazzos have been making quite the fashion statement for a while now, and freelance designer, Niyati Manoj says:

“They are the easiest option this Ugadi. But, instead of just going for normal width palazzos, you could try ones that are really roomy. Also, colour blocking is trending so you could wear a long, embroidered navy blue kurta over navy blue palazzos, and maybe add a bright coloured dupatta to your ensemble. And if you find it too simple, replace it with a colourful phulkari one instead.”

For those looking to wear an Indo-Western outfit, she suggests repurposing a crop top. “Crop tops could be worn over ethnic maxi skirts and teamed with a pair of Kolhapuri chappals or designer juttis. And if you don’t mind experimenting, you could even team your crop top with a pair of dhoti pants. Throw on some Boho chic jewellery and you’re good to go.”

While repurposing existing articles of clothing requires creativity, there are some pieces that are better left alone. “Owing to the summer heat of 2017, I would recommend steering clear of jackets and heavy ghagras,” says Aditi.
