What are the trends in beauty and skincare this year? Here is a look at the beauty buzzwords of 2018 and what you need to do in order to keep your skin looking splendid through the summer…

Go bespoke

We have heard of bespoke clothing but today, bespoke has entered the vocabulary of beauty and skincare in a big way. Bespoke beauty, involves finding colours, textures and ingredients that have been created exclusively for you. One size fits all, is a maxim that no longer exists. For instance, a certain shade of pink might suit only certain skin tones or a newly-launched face cream may address a concern that does not matter to you.

Many make-up companies have now created profile systems where customers enter information about their hair, eyes and skin which are then matched with the right colours and ingredients to make customised products. In skincare, you get to choose from a variety of options – plumping, lifting, spot-erasing, mattifying, hydrating components – as you might require, and the right serums and creams are crafted for you. In some countries, people fill in questionnaires and undergo face-to-face or telephone consultations with experts who will then mix bespoke products on the spot for them. The advantage lies in fact that you get exactly what your skin needs and you also get to watch the bespoke ingredients work wonders for you.

Get gorgeous

This is the year to invest in colour. Summer trends include an array of metallic blue and ultra-violet eye makeup, high shine plum and cherry shades on the lips and rose gold on the cheeks. “It is all about being subtle yet glamorous this year,” says beauty guru Gauri Kapur who also runs a beauty academy in Bengaluru. “Women are getting more experimental with colour and for this season; deeper and softer shades are in vogue. Other trends include choosing from an array of matte lipsticks, dewy foundations, primer serums, illuminating skin liquids and metallic 3D eye-shadows. As for your tresses, play with bold and bright hair colours for the summer”

Glam up the eyes

The eyes take centre-stage this year and there are many looks to try out this season. Long and luxurious lashes are trending, teamed with heavy liner and bold eye-shadow. This eye-popping look is a rage, and more so, when you add a touch of blue or emerald. Turquoise gel liners, emerald eye pencils and metallic blue shadow can make the perfect style statement this summer. For the evening, it is best to work on creating sooty lashes with heavy mascara and going for deeper lip colour.

“Frosty eye-shadows when used with eye-liner with matching shimmer looks gorgeous,” says Zarina Nissar, a beauty professional in the city. “Make sure your skin is clean and luminous so that the focus can shift to the eyes. Contouring with creamy colour should be an important step in your make-up regimen. The hot lip colours for the summer are red, orange and fuchsia.”

Grab the glitter

High shine is on top of the beauty charts this year. From adding a glow with a golden highlighter, applying shiny silver along the rims of the eyes, using face illuminators in abundance and experimenting with a range of metallic lipsticks, there are innumerable ways to catch the glossy-skin-and-sparkly-face look.

Gather the exotic

Skip the aloe, liquorice and coconut creams to try something new in skincare this year. Yangu oil is big news now and is known to hydrate and plump the skin. This beautiful oil, which is otherwise known as cape chestnut is extracted from the seed of an African forest tree. Another beauty product that is making news is the caviar oil foam which contains beluga caviar and is priceless for its deep cleansing properties. Many women also swear by grape seed serum made of white wine grapes that boosts collagen and restores radiance to the face. Another option is the red clover face mask that leads to healthy, glowing skin.

Greet the new lingo

The latest in skincare needs an understanding of the vocabulary of new ingredients, procedures and products. Some of the hottest treatments of the year include “Probiotic skin care” which maintains the skin microbiome and helps in conditions like acne, irritation, redness and dryness of the face. Crystal skin care which involves the use of crystals is also taking centre stage. This treatment involves the use of crystals in skin care products like gemstone lotions, organic rose quartz face creams and black tourmaline infused moisturisers to tackle a variety of skin problems. Another product to look out for is the next-gen face sheet with its two-step process that includes a micro-needling mask and a cream concentrate.

Each day brings new technology to the forefront. Right from charcoal masks, rose masks, pore vacuums, skin boosters, sustainable sourcing of ingredients and micro needling – there is a brand-new skin lingo out there that has to be learnt before making any purchase.

Above all beauty and skin care this year, is about making your skin look as natural and blemish free as possible. Reach for the new, but do not try anything new that catches your eye. Rather, look for bespoke beauty solutions to make it your most beautiful year yet.
