As the mercury continues to go up and down in the Capital, Gurgaon warms up to home style hospitality at a very chic bar and restaurant, Spoonful of Soul, located in the posh DLF Phase III, 27 Nathupur Road, which is only couple of months old. I say home style because it’s a venture started by siblings Anuradha Khanna and Rohit Sodhi — two modest souls whose love for great food and passion for hospitality spurred them to leave their successful careers as automotive engineers and pursue their culinary dreams. Spoonful of Soul apart from its food has an ambience that is classy.

I was surprised to see a very limited menu but it turned out to be a gem of a collection. Each dish has its own charm. I started with the soup of the day which was a Prawn Bisque on that day. The French origin soup was smooth and nicely seasoned. The accompanying bread needs a mention too: crisp, thin and fresh. As a habit I followed my soup with a salad, opting for an avacado and grape salad. It turned out to be refreshing and delicious. I loved the combination and tanginess of orange reduction.

Moving on to the starters, first came the spicy Oriental prawns. Being tossed in chilli garlic and topped with sesame and fried onions gave the dish a new dimension. The falafel platter was innovative too, with pita stuffed with beetroot. I suggest to dip it in baba ghanoush or hummus and enjoy the pita to the hilt. But the delicacy of the day for me was the dish of warm mushrooms. The melange of four kinds of mushrooms topped with caramalised onions tasted divine. One praiseworthy aspect of the dishes at Spoonful of Soul is presentation of all the dishes. Even the kabab platter which was presented on hanging skewers was a delight for the eyes. The flavours of the skewers were perfect too. I quite liked the fish and chicken chunks which were juicy and perfectly cooked. Before jumping to the desserts I tried out the aubergine au gratin. The diversion was well worth it.

All that delicious food sent my expectations of dessert soaring, but I was mildly disappointed. The Mocha Delight was overly frozen, but the Date Cigars were crunchy and worth a try.

Meal for two = costs Rs.1500 approximately
