It’s mid month. The wallet is half full. We can’t shop; neither can we afford a luxurious treatment at the spa. It’s too late for a movie but know what? It’s never too late for dessert. Luckily for us we are on Khader Nawaz Khan Road and a flashy light that reads Dessert Studio catches our eye. Through a lawn, up a flight of steps and we are in the Studio. It’s a subtle white space with large glass windows, a contrast to the psychedelic lights that we saw earlier. The ceiling has red canopy-like decorations and the room is reminiscent of a strawberry cheese cake. “That’s a sign,” my friend tells me. “We should order the strawberry cheese cake here,” she announces. The Philly-style cheese cake with its crunchy base and translucent red top layer is a delight. It’s soft and feels like cutting into little pieces of cloud.

Dessert Studio houses three brands ChocoBerries from the UAE, Shake A Take from the U.K. and Yogo D-Lite from Italy that comes in flavours such as green apple, lemon, hazel nut and blueberry. It also has an interesting selection of 17 colourful toppings including M&M, butterscotch crunch, musk melon and more.

ChocoBerries is a treat for lovers of strawberry and chocolate as most of their desserts are a blend of the fruit and Belgian chocolate. The menu includes waffles, crepes, cheese cake, tiramisu and pannacotta. We shortlist two from here the Signature crepe and the Opera — since it was the last prima donna standing in the tray and we assume it should be a hit. But we are wrong. The spongy cake alternating between six layers of light almond sponge cake, coffee butter cream, and dark chocolate ganache has a slightly soapy taste and not worth the price.

We decide to stop with that but ironically the friend who is on a diet tugs at my sleeves like a little child and points to the Shake A Take menu. Her eyes light up as she scans through it ...Oreo shake, Lindt shake, Snickers shake… and minutes later she triumphantly walks back to the table with a giant glass in her hand. It’s finely blended Ferrero Rocher in a thick shake which could do with a little more chocolate in it.

The crepe is liberally slathered in homemade dark and white Belgian chocolate has generous chunks of strawberry, kiwi fruit and banana, it’s gooey, it’s rich and it’s filling.

Dessert Studio is a place where you definitely can’t afford to count calories. It is for the hungry and those with a sweet tooth.
