1,008 goats sacrificed in temple
The festival started on the first of Tamil month Chithirai (April 14) and animal sacrifice was performed on the 14th day (Friday).

: Sacrificing animals, in the name of invoking Gods and Goddess and blind superstitious beliefs, still continue in the rural areas of the State.
In one such incident at Poosariyur near Pature village in Bhavani taluk, Erode district on Friday, 1,008 goats were slaughtered inside the Semmuneeswarar temple on a single day as part of the annual festival.
It was a gory sight as the goat blood was flowing on the entire temple premises.
The villagers of Pature, Vellitirupur, Anthiyur and Bhavani came to the temple early with goats, stood in queue, slaughtered the animal inside the temple and left the carcass in the temple premises itself and went home.
The temple authorities said that the festival started on the first of Tamil month Chithirai (April 14) and on the fourteenth day (Friday), 1,008 goats were sacrificed for Semmuneeswarar.
Special poojas to be conducted
The temple employees and poor people from neighbouring areas take the meat home as, according to belief, those who sacrificed the goats are not supposed to consume it.
The temple authorities said that the entire temple premises would be cleaned either on Friday night or Saturday morning and special poojas would be conducted for the presiding deity.
