Hiring parties
A pickup vehicle, not a tableau!
WHEN PARTYING is the name of the game, can hire service agents be far behind? Anything from chairs and tables to utensils, lamps and shamianas are there for the asking, for a ''small'' price. With the onset of the season of marriages and festivals, hire service units, as they call themselves, are out to make hay while the sun shines.
These outlets have sprung up at virtually every vantage point in the city and suburbs. Auxiliary services come in the form of pickup autorickshaws which can carry startlingly large consignments and weave their way through busy roads with practised ease.
The items most in demand are chairs and tables made from moulded plastic. They come in bright colours, and can be assembled or dismantled in a jiffy. In fact, the manufacturers of this popular brand of furniture seem to keep hiring agents in mind when they create new models.
The dining tables can seat two, four or six persons. The chairs telescope into each other so that large numbers can be transported with ease. Pickup autos with colourful stockpiles weaving through the congested National Highway at Karamana or Pulimood are a familiar sight.
Then there are the all-rolled-into-one hiring agents, especially in the suburbs, who also offer catering services. The advantage for the client is that he can sit back and relax while the agent takes care of the ''A'' to ''Z'' of the function.
Now hiring agents in the State capital have gone so far as to organise themselves into an association to defend their means of livelihood and fight for their right to hire (and fire?). Happy partying...er., hiring!
