And now, something for everyone

IT IS not the cellular companies alone that offer freebies, and BSNL Chennai Telephones is extending its entire basket of phone-plus services at no extra cost. So, an average subscriber could hope to get the CLIP, hotline, abbreviated dialling and a host of other add-ons.

What does it bring to the subscriber, apart from the monthly saving of Rs. 110 that they otherwise would have to pay as access charge for the facilities?

With CLIP, which stands for Calling Line Identification Presentation, they get to know the calling party's telephone number. Hopefully, it would mean an end to hoax calls and those that leave you disturbed.

To save on the initial payment of Rs. 50 and the recurring monthly charge of Rs. 50, the subscriber needs to spend on a DoT approved CLIP (display) equipment, which is available from Rs. 650 onwards. There are also phones that come with attached CLIP.

Using the abbreviated dialling, currently charged at Rs. 20 every month, 20 frequently called telephone numbers could be contacted just by dialling a pre-determined number followed by a 2-digit code. It could be a local or a NSD number.

The hotline facility, whose monthly rental was Rs. 20, facilitates in contacting a designated number without dialling the number. In other words, the call is connected to the pre-designated contact within a maximum of 10 seconds of lifting the handset and without dialling any number.

The other services that have been made free include the call transfer or `follow me' facility. S.S. Iyer, Chief General Manager of Chennai Telephones, says the decision to `free' the phone-plus facilities is yet another customer friendly initiative and a measure to counter the competition.

"The services would be offered to the subscribers on a first come first serve basis and depending on the technical capability of the exchanges," he added.

This is not all as there is more good news from Chennai Telephones, for those who remain hooked to the www. The BSNL entity today launched the Direct Internet Access Service (DIAS), at its Anna Nagar and Anna Road exchanges. With the service, for which the total initial deposit is Rs. 5,000 and the monthly rental is Rs. 1,800, the subscriber will remain connected to the Internet 24-hours a day and use the telephone simultaneously.

Mr. Iyer explained that the DIAS subscriber would always be connected to the Internet as long as the computer is on. While making telephone calls, the speed of Internet access will be 64 kbps and if the telephone line is idle, it would increase up to a maximum of 128 kbps. Chennai Telephones would provide the modem. For more details about DIAS, contact: 28292447 and 26206464.
