A musical treat

Musical rendition by a galaxy of eminent performers like Teejan Bai, Hans Raj Hans and the Nizami Brothers promises seven days of pure musical bliss for people in the Capital.

In its endeavour to provide "a great thrust to Delhi as a cultural city'', the second Delhi Tourism Folk Music Festival is being organised by Dilli Haat in association with SPIC MACAY from this Thursday (January 30) to February 9.

Commemorating "The Mahatma'', the festival will take off on Martyrs' Day with bhajans, kirtans and folk songs by Meeta Pandit and Deepmala Mohan. Over the next fortnight it will showcase a series of performances like the ballads of the Pandavas in the fiery Chhattisgarh tradition by Teejan Bai, Maharashtra folk music lavani and Rajasthani folk music by Langas and Manganiars. Hans Raj Hans, well known for his Sufiana mind-set and ethos, will also be inspiring people to promote universal love and compassion on February 7.

``The festival showcasing the repositories of the Indian cultural heritage would be a treat for the senses,'' says the Managing Director and CEO of Delhi Tourism, Rajeev Talwar, adding that people can enjoy the festival by just paying Rs. 10 -- the entrance fee for Dilli Haat.

A highlight of the festival will be Punjabi folk music by the Wadali Brothers. It was at a nondescript village in Punjab called Guru ki Wadali that the brothers were introduced to Sufiana qalaams at a tender age and they have maintained the purity of the tradition ever since. The Wadali Brothers' performance is slated for Sunday, February 2.
