Exotic cakes on display

LAST CHRISTMAS, and no we are not singing George Michael's hit ode about love gone asunder during the merry season. Last Christmas was a real bounty for food freaks, especially those with a sweet tooth. All the star hotels had cake sales and most bakeries ended up selling cakes at discount prices.

In fact, while the lobbies at star hotels looked like Santa's cake paradise with giant gingerbread houses and smells of caramel custard, rum-soaked currants, and marzipans, bakeries resembled marriage pandals.

Layers of cakes in attractive packages and sporting the traditional Merry Christmas and Happy New Year icing were neatly stacked at these makeshift pandals. Many passers-by mistook these pandals to have a religious purpose. Watching them remove their sandals before they entered the "holy" place was quite a sight. Children had a great time enticing, cajoling, and bamboozling their parents to shell out money for buying candied shells and cakes.

Prices as usual were as different as sponge cake is from pure plum cake. While star hotels charged nothing less than Rs.150 for their cakes, and that by the way was for starters (cakes in small sizes), the roadside bakeries were more affordable. Oh, we don't dare to point this disparity in prices, because we have realised that quality comes at a price.

Now, if you have not started drooling already with this endless talks of cakes and bakes, here is some news which is sure to get your sweet tooth chattering.

Thom's Bakery and Supermarket has organised an exhibition of exotic cakes and deserts from Tuesday. Cake connoisseurs can have a slice of their favourite cake till February 4. The exhibition would be held on 1/2, Wheeler Road, Frazer Town, where the bakery is located. With a specialty menu on display at the exhibition, egg-less variety of cakes is also on display. So, take heart, all you pure vegetarians.

On sale and display is an array of exotic cakes, celebration cakes, joy cakes, kids' jungle theme cakes, and pastries and confectionaries. And if you are wondering what the joy cake is about, so are we.
