No more dead ends
PICTURE the following: you are taking a nice long ride on a beautiful evening. The cool breeze ruffles your hair while the last rays of the setting sun warm your skin. Ahead of you lies the smooth, black tarmac, gleaming invitingly as you press on the accelerator, surging ahead into the evening. And suddenly, you can go no farther. There simply is no road ahead! The only way is the way back. How does one feel then?
Life often brings one to a stage where one feels that one has reached a cul-de-sac.
Thankfully, in reality, life is more than what you can see in your immediate environs. If you are imaginative you can chart out new paths - paths you have never thought existed. .
This analogy can very well be applied to the workplace. You are talented and hard working and like to get the best life has to offer. You join an organisation and rise like a meteor, going up the career ladder swiftly. Your colleagues respect you for your talent and your drive and your boss swears by your ability. All is well until you reach a stage when you cannot move forward any more. You have reached a point of stagnation. You become like the like a bee in a bottle that can only bat against the glass walls that shows what lies ahead, but will not let you pass. Now what? :
Know them self
True, the world is yours for the asking, but where precisely do you want to go? What do you want out of life, your profession? Where do you want to see yourself five ten years hence? Make a list of all your desired achievements and goals and write them down. Be honest with yourself. This will tell you a lot about who you are today and what you need to do to get where you want to reach.
Priorities
If you are honest with yourself, you should have at least five important goals you would like to reach. You need to prioritise somewhere and now is the right time. Ask yourself where you want to go first. Which is the most important goal to you? ? List your goals and aspirations in order of importance and chronology.
Strategize
Talent can take you a long way, but in the long run, what also counts is strategic planning. What do you need to have to get where you wish to go? Make a plan and work to accomplish that.
While these three factors can help you follow the vistas that life opens for you with zest, you need some additional qualities to optimize your opportunities.:
Take the leadDemonstrate leadership. Show that you can handle responsibilities beyond your perceived ability. Focus on your work and help colleagues do their work better.
Acquire new qualificationsYou do not have the qualifications yet, but get on with the process, so it becomes easier for the management to think of moving you up the ladder. Take a course in the distance / part-time / evening mode.
Appear rightYou need to inspire confidence from the first glance. Dress neatly; not too stiff, but formal enough to command respect.
Be approachableBe a team player. Let people around you know you are there to help.
Dead-ends appear dead, but in real life, there is always a way if you take the trouble to work it out to know which way to go!
