Great expectations

THINGS in life rarely, if ever, turn out as you plan them. So desist from building such castles in the sand! It's great to have at least some expectations come true but what happens when they fall flat? This is especially so when you take up a job and discover that it is anything but what you expected it to be.

When a job falls really short of expectations, a sense of disappointment is natural as is the shock of being rudely woken up. You feel disenchanted, cheated and wish you were just back at your old place where everything seemed hunky dory. Take heart, things can't be all that bad; it might just be a case of having too many expectations. It may not really be a case of your worst nightmare coming true but of rather unrealistic expectations that are not met.

People are people

Wherever you go, the kind of people you encounter will remain more or less the same, no matter what the colour, race or nationality. Therefore, you might initially be charmed or overawed by the atmosphere or the people. It's just the newness of being in a different place and the excitement of beginning something all over again.

What is, will be

A corporate environment remains more or less the same across the world, with minor differences of culture, climate and their unique rules and regulations. In essence, a corporate body will always be a surreal place, as if everything in it has been simulated to appear like a real environment! You'll only begin to feel `real' once you're out of its confining environs. Therefore, avoid getting taken in by the officiousness, but of course do make it a point to follow the rules to stay out of trouble. But never ever let it muffle or suffocate you. The moment it does, it's time to do something.

Top dog

Remember that the top dog is no different from the under dog. Differences exist in the form of responsibilities and duties. Top management is management like anywhere else. Never totally believe or distrust them. Keep to the straight and narrow path, trust your own judgement and use your discretion when it comes to dealing with them. Verify facts, and be smart enough to know when they're pulling the wool over your eyes.

Be yourself

The worst thing that can happen to you when you work with a corporate house is to let it mould you in its likeness and transform you into cloned anonymity! Retain your soul and spirit, and work as you would to meet your individual needs and creative satisfaction.
