Election for the posts of president and vice-president of Hassan Zilla Panchayat was postponed again here on Monday due to lack of quorum. The new date is June 3.
The election was postponed as all 23 members of the Janata Dal (Secular) and one member of the BJP skipped the meeting. With this the election was postponed for the third time.
The JD(S) has opposed the reservation category announced for the post of ZP president. The post has been reserved for Scheduled Tribe (Woman). The JD(S), though the single largest party by winning 23 seats in the 40-member ZP, had no opportunity to claim the president's post as the party has no member to suit the category reserved for the post.
Regional Commissioner A.M.Kunjappa convened the meeting of the ZP at noon. As only 16 members of the Congress were present, the returning officer adjourned the meeting for half-an-hour. He postponed the election to June 3 as the members' strength did not increase by 12.30 p.m.
Mr. Kunjappa told presspersons "We will recommend disqualification of those members who remained absent for the fourth meeting".
