Raptors snap Cavs’ streak

Toronto Raptors pulled one back in the Eastern Conference finals, beating Cleveland Cavaliers 99-84 to open their account in this series, 2-1.

After 10 wins on the trot in the playoffs, the Cavs finally met their match at Toronto. While DeMar DeRozan led the scoring for the Raptors with 32 points, a large part of the credit goes to Bismack Biyombo, who set a Toronto playoff record of 26 rebounds.

Cavaliers shooting was woeful, as they converted just 28 of their 79 shots in total.

Anand targets 2018 Candidates Chess tournament

With questions about his retirement following him everywhere, Viswanathan Anand tried to put it to rest by making his intentions clear.

At the players auction of the Maharashtra Chess League, Anand stated that he is looking to participate in the grand chess tour and try and qualify for the next Candidates Chess tournament.

Captain Cook all praise for match-winner Bairstow

England decimated visiting Sri Lanka, completing an innings and 88 runs victory inside three days in the first Test at Headingley.

James Anderson finished with match figures of 10 for 45, but captain Alastair Cook said that was expected of his premier strike bowler given the conditions.

Cook was particularly impressed with Jonathan Bairstow’s match winning 140, which helped England out of a precarious position and helped them post 298 in their first innings.

Rooney admits Manchester United fell short of expectations

Despite having just won the FA Cup with an impressive 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in the final, the mood among those supporting Manchester United wasn’t great.

Questions persist regarding the future of manager Louis van Gaal as rumours regarding the appointment of Jose Mourinho gathered momentum.

While captain Wayne Rooney refused to answer questions regarding the future of van Gaal, he did make it clear that the team had fallen short of their expectations.

Rooney stated that as a team they need to be “challenging for the main trophies” and termed their fifth place finish in the Premier League as a disappointment.

SWIMMING

Campbells set their eyes on 100m freestyle

The Campbell family continue to set the standard in the 100m freestyle event as sisters Cate and Bronte finished first and third at the Japan Open.

While Cate clocked 52.38 seconds, matching her world leading time this year, to take gold, sister and reigning world champion Bronte had to settle for bronze.

Cseh, Pellegrini win golds at Europeans

Italy’s Federica Pellegrini won the 200m freestyle gold ahead of Femke Heemskerk by 0.04 seconds at the European championships, her time of 1:55.93 giving her a record fourth successive women’s 200m free gold.

Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh, meanwhile, became the first male swimmer after two decades to win the 100/200 butterfly double, clocking this year’s best of 50.86 seconds on his way to the 100m butterfly gold.
