The Canterville Ghost - Oscar Wilde

For over three centuries the ghost of Sir Simon has haunted, horrified, and plagued the inhabitants of an old English mansion. However, now he faces new residents, the likes of whom he has never encountered before.

The Otis's are an American family. Though they are warned that the mansion is haunted, they refuse to be frightened. In the fact the ghost is the one who is disturbed by their behaviour. The children torment him with booby-traps. The husband and wife offer the ghost grease for his creaky manacles and cough medicine for his scary laughter. Stunned by their audacity the depressed ghost tries his best to keep a low profile. However, when a prophecy is revealed, young Virginia Otis makes contact with him and helps the tormented ghost with his problems.
