Shimla’s share of problems

Shimla, the Queen of Hills, the most loved destination of tourists, is facing a major problem. Sewage and solid waste is being disposed in a very unscientific manner. This is posing a threat to the environment of Shimla. It is shocking to note that only 13 per cent of the sewage is treated and the rest is not. Apart from this, there is an acute shortage of water and parking lots. Non-existence of sewerage network is also the reason behind the non-tapping of the sewage.

Rahul back into action

The vice-president Congress Party Rahul Gandhi returned to India after his 56-day sabbatical recently. Many have raised questions about his leadership qualities since he left when the Budget session was on in the parliament. Rahul was said to have gone to reflect on the recent election debacles and the future course of the party. Rahul addressed a mega farmers rally on April 19 focusing on the land bill and the intended amendments proposed by the Central government which is seen as anti-farmers.

AAP’s deepening woes

There has been lot of infighting going on in the Aam Aadmi Party. The latest crisis to hit the three-year-old party was from the Yadav-Bhushan camp. Four leaders- Yogendra Yadav, Prashant Bhushan, Ajit Jha and Anand Kumar were expelled from the party for anti-party activities. These rebels were served a show cause notice for holding a Swaraj Samwad. The National Disciplinary Committee dismissed them saying their explanations were not satisfactory. Most of the expelled rebels have blamed Arvind Kejriwal for not acting in a democratic way.

Ramdev refuses cabinet position

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev, who campaigned extensively for the Bharatiya Janata Party in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, was offered the status of a cabinet minister by the BJP-led Haryana government. Ramdev declined the post saying he wants to remain a sage. Opposition condemned the offer of the state government. Baba Ramdev is the State’s brand ambassador to promote Yoga and Ayurveda.

New leader at the helm

The 50-year-old- Communist Party of India-Marxist elected Sitaram Yechury as its new party general secretary. He took over from Prakash Karat and would the fifth general secretary of the party. Yechury said his task was focussed on strengthening unity of the Left and other democratic forces.
