What is Qwikipedia?

Ever been on Wikipedia to look up an article? More often than not, we start with one topic, click on a few links and within no time are reading about something else.

Qwikipedia is a game that tries to quench this curiosity in us. The objective is to get to a particular wiki page, starting from a specific article, using minimal clicks. There is no single correct answer, so we might surprise ourselves by finding new routes each time!

Friday’s Free rider

>Minke Whale —> >Eiger

Minke whale

The second smallest baleen whale (only pygmy right whale is smaller), minke whales vary 30 to 35 feet in terms of length when fully grown. Distinguished from other whales by a white band on each flipper, minke whales can be black, gray or purple in colour.

Despite the UN prohibition, Japan plans to target the Antarctic minke whales, an official said on Wednesday.

International Whaling Commission

An international body set up by the terms of the International Convention of the Regulation of Whaling (ICRW) , the International Whaling Commission tries to provide for the orderly development of the whaling industry. Japan, the Russian Federation and a number of other countries currently oppose the moratorium adopted by IWC in 1982.

Kudos!
Sukanya V Mohan of Sree Narayana Public School, Poothotta, was able to find an alternate path for yesterday’s Thursday’s Trekker. Here it is: Shiva Ayyadurai —> System Biology —> Organism —> Reproduction —> Pollination
Switzerland

Despite being a landlocked country with no history of whaling, Switzerland joined the IWC in the 1980s. Located in western and central Europe, Switzerland, one of the most developed countries, has two global cities of Zurich and Geneva as its economic centres.

While most of the population is concentrated on the plateau, the Alps occupy the greater part of the territory. A section of the Bernese Alps that contains 72 waterfalls is well known for the Jungfrau and Eiger and the picturesque values in that region.

Eiger

One of the emblematic sights of the Swiss Alps, Eiger is a 3,970m mountain of the Bernese Alps. Eiger’s first ascent was made by Swiss guides Christian Almer and Peter Bohren and Irishman Charles Barrington.

A recent project that uses custom-made 360-degree cameras that is mounted on the back of the climbers scaling the Eiger is offering stunning, breathtaking views that are on offer.

So the path that we have traversed today is:

Minke Whale —> International Whaling Commission —> Switzerland —> Eiger

Three clicks! Hop over. It’s time for the next question:

Monday’s Marauder

>Milky Way —> >Ayman al-Zawahiri
