Farming to be taken up in 10,000 acres

Permanent fairs to sell Kudumbasree products; Scheme to supply fresh milk in urban areas

PALAKKAD: The 2,566 Kudumbasree units in the district will take up cultivation of paddy, vegetables and pulses in 10,000 acres of leased and fallow land.

Kudumbasree Mission coordinator Saidalavi said here on Wednesday that the government was keen on the development of agriculture in the district and was extending various financial assistance schemes and subsidies. So, the Kudumbasree units had come forward to bring more land under cultivation, he said.

He said there were 2,000 micro-enterprises of the Kudumbasree in the district. Farm and micro-enterprise products were being sold at permanent monthly fairs organised in Palakkad, Ottappalam, Cherpulassery, Chittur, Nemmara and Vadakancherry, Mr. Saidalavi said.

In addition, Onam fares for Kudumbasree products would be organised in Attappady, Cherpulassery, Ottappalam, Palakkad, Chittur and Vadakkancherry from September 6 to 10, he said.

A scheme to supply fresh milk in urban areas had been planned to help milk producers. At Kannadi panchayat near Palakkad town, 50 farmers were being given two high-yielding cows each. Financial assistance would be given to construct hygienic cattle sheds. The fresh milk will be bottled so as to reach the consumers within 30 minutes, he said.

Ten marketing executives had been posted to organise the marketing of the fresh milk. Each bottle of milk will have a unique code number. This number will help the consumers to locate the source of milk and its quality, Mr. Saidalavi said.
