    India, ASEAN seek early FTA

    Singapore (PTI): India and ASEAN on Wednesday voiced their strong commitment for expeditious and successful conclusion of their Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

    At the foreign ministers meeting of East Asia Summit (EAS), which was represented by Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma, both sides reiterated their strong commitment for an expeditious and successful conclusion of India-ASEAN FTA, official sources said.

    The ministers reviewed India's bilateral cooperation with ASEAN focusing on various activities and projects implemented in the past, the on-going ones and those planned.

    ASEAN Foreign Ministers conveyed appreciation at the progress of cooperation with India in various priority areas, including the implementation of the India-ASEAN Integration (IAI) programme particularly the establishment of Entrepreneurial Development Centres, English Language Training Centres, the special Course for ASEAN diplomats.

    Sharma also presented India's stand on issues of food security, energy security, environment, climate change and sustainable development at the meeting here.

    Sharma led the Indian delegation to attend the EAS Foreign Ministers' Meeting, ASEAN-India Ministerial Meeting and the 15th ASEAN Regional forum.

    India and other members of the EAS reaffirmed their commitment to various cooperation initiatives and activities under the EAS framework a group of 16 countries, including ASEAN, India, Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea.

    Thailand briefed the EAS ministers regarding the arrangements and substantive agenda being evolved for the 4th EAS in Bangkok in December this year.
