Shillong (PTI): The Meghalaya government is examining the report of the Cabinet Committee formed by the previous government on influx of illegal migrants into the state.

"The Cabinet Committee on Influx (CCI) had submitted the report during the previous MDA government and the present MPA government is examining it for a final decision on the matter," Chief Minister Donkupar Roy said.

The CCI was constituted after the Khasi Students' Union (KSU) had raised a hue and cry over the issue of influx of illegal immigrants into the state and demanded effective steps to address the problem.

The committee, headed by former and present Urban Affairs Minister Paul Lyngdoh, had proposed introduction of a three-tier card system and recommended amendment to the Inter- State Workmen Regulation Act, 1979 (Amended in 1985).

The KSU has threatened to resort to "drastic course of action" if the government fails to implement work permit system without delay.

The previous Congress-led government had urged the Centre to introduce a multi-purpose identity card or three-tier card system in the state in order to check alleged unabated infiltration of illegal foreign nationals.
