Surfer injured in shark attack off Sydney beach

Sydney (AP): A teenage boy surfing with his father off a popular Sydney beach on Sunday had his leg mauled by a shark, marking the area's third shark attack in as many weeks.

The 15-year-old, whose name has not been released, was flown by helicopter from Avalon Beach to a hospital in Sydney, ambulance spokesman Brett Garvey said.

The boy was being treated for thigh injuries and was in a satisfactory condition, Garvey said.

Avalon Beach Surf Lifesaving Club spokesman Nick Miller said the father also was surfing and rescued his injured son.

"It got him around the top of his leg and his calf muscle and the father came... and dragged him in," Miller said.

Earlier this month, Navy diver Paul de Gelder, 31, lost a leg and part of a hand when he was mauled by a 9-foot bull shark in Sydney Harbour. The next day, surfer Glenn Orgias, 33, was attacked off popular Bondi Beach by an 8-foot great white shark that partially severed a hand. Surgeons successfully reattached the hand.
